Situated on 200 acres, the Ariens Nordic Center project was a multi-faceted endeavor. It aims to provide world-class ski facilities and equipment for year-round training and competitions. Northeast Asphalt performed fine grading, asphalt paving, and topsoil shouldering for a 3k asphalt paved roller ski loop for off-season training, pedestrian walk paths, and parking lots.
The asphalt paving was done in phases, with the lower layer installed last fall and the surface layer installed earlier this summer. This approach was chosen to allow for a freeze-thaw cycle, which helps to prevent future settlement in the surface layer. After receiving feedback from various groups, including the US Biathlon Team and former Olympians, NEA and Ariens collaborated to select the best surface mix for roller skiing.
The center includes a 5k lighted trail network for cross-country skiing and a Nordic Playground for youth and beginner skiers. Additionally, the project featured snowshoe trails and a state-of-the-art electronic and automated 20-point Kurvinen Biathlon Target System. To support the snowmaking process, a 10 million-gallon pond was built. NEA paved a pathway to Spectator Hill to provide pedestrians access to an excellent view of events. This included a tunnel under a section of the event trail.
This project is a landmark for the community, providing a recreational destination for the public and visitors to the area. During non-winter months, designated dog trails are available for walking dogs. It will also serve as a premier training facility for elite athletes.
