Madison East-West Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project aims to improve public transit in the Madison area. It includes the construction of 45 new stations, dedicated bus lanes, modernized shelters, larger electric buses, and charging stations. Snow-melt technology will also be implemented. The project reduces travel time and includes traffic signal prioritization.
Project Details
- The first segment consists of the construction of 45 new stations from the west side of Madison (Junction Rd) to the east side (East Towne Mall) through the University of Wisconsin campus and Capitol area.
- The project includes dedicated bus lanes, modernized shelters, and larger all-electric articulating buses.
- Snow-melt technology will provide heated concrete platforms at passenger loading areas of new stations.
- Travel time is reduced through fewer stops than standard bus lines, increased frequency of buses, and traffic signal prioritization.
- The project also includes the construction of overhead charging stations for electric buses.
- This coordinated Walbec effort includes the Zenith Tech Bridge, Site Concrete divisions, and Parisi’s Site Utility, Excavation, and Site Concrete divisions.
Project Challenges
- The ZTI team carefully plans and coordinates project activities to minimize impacts on existing bus routes and coordinate with 40+ adjacent projects throughout Madison.
- Construction is staged to maintain pedestrian access at all times.
- Downtown stations will be constructed in Winter to minimize the impact on the University and events near the Capitol.
