Project Summary
As the prime contractor, Zenith Tech (ZTI) is managing the complete reconstruction of I-43 northbound and southbound from Capitol Drive to north of Hampton Avenue in Milwaukee County. This project includes six new bridges, one bridge overlay, a pedestrian box culvert, noise walls, retaining walls, and six sign structures. This project addresses poor bridge and pavement conditions and will improve this six-lane corridor. Work began in 2021 with projected completion scheduled for November 2023.
Project Details
- Intricate construction and utility staging was required due to the significant reduction in roadway elevation.
- Due to being built on the grounds of the abandoned Union Refrigerator Transit Company (URT) railyard, the management and reuse of contaminated soils presented a unique challenge. The team worked closely with WDNR to implement mitigation practices and ensure environmental requirements were met.
- ZTI redesigned most of the temporary storm sewer on the project allowing for easier installation and over $75K in savings to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).
- Additional Cost Reduction Incentives (CRI) were presented and executed, resulting in over $200K in savings.
