The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac to connect the Upper and Lower Peninsula of the state of Michigan. Opened in 1957, the 8,614-foot bridge (“Mighty Mac”) is the world’s 16th-longest in total suspension and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western hemisphere.
The project consisted of 4.18 miles of concrete and steel deck repair of I-75 on the Mackinac Bridge between St. Ignace in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Mackinaw City in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The project required the cold milling and removing of the existing driving surface as well as resurfacing the bridge with a highly specialized, low-permeability hot-mix asphalt mixture.
All work was conducted while one lane of traffic was maintained on the bridge in each direction.
