Payne + Dolan undertook the resurfacing of pit road and the start/finish line at Wisconsin’s historic Milwaukee Mile racing venue. The project encompassed full-depth pavement milling and concrete paving of a section of pit road, along with milling, base patching, crackfilling, and final surfacing to enhance the track’s durability and performance.
Our team overcame several challenges, including effective dust management and specialized crack filler application. We controlled dust through multiple sweeps and water truck usage, ensuring proper adhesion between layers. In collaboration with Sherwin Industries, we selected a high-temperature-resistant crack filler to prevent reflective cracking during races.
Pavement durability is crucial for a racetrack, necessitating a specialty mix. To prevent pavement pickup by racing tires, our team formulated a specialized asphalt mix with a higher softening point of 180°F, incorporating modified oil for increased resilience. This custom mix was designed to meet the unique demands of a racetrack surface.
The project garnered high praise from State of Wisconsin officials and an Indy car paving consultant. Our tailored approach ensured long-term durability and performance under the rigorous conditions of a racetrack.
